Band Member/Parent Start-up Meetings

On Monday, August 2nd, all band members and parents will report to Whitmer at a specified time to take care of many important organizational items. Several "stations" will be set-up in the auditorium. Students and parents will visit each station and take care of items including fitting gloves, fitting shoes, fitting shirts, and completing medical cards. Parents can pay for accessories at this time if they choose. Returning band members will re-fit their uniform, and new band members will be fitted. Parents will be on-hand to take uniforms for alterations.

In addition, a representative from Rettig Music will be present. Students/parents can purchase reeds, valve oil, flip-folders, and other accessories as needed. Finally, representatives from the WLS Band & Orchestra Boosters will be present to answer questions, explain opportunities for service (concessions stands, committee involvement, etc.), and provide information regarding time/location of meetings.

Report times are as follows:

Seniors: 4:00 P.M.     Juniors: 5:00 P.M.     Sophomores  6:00 P.M.     Freshmen  7:00 P.M.

Chaperons

Being a marching band chaperon is very hard work, but very rewarding. We use chaperons at all home and away games. The "job description" includes hauling equipment to and from the stadium, loading and unloading the truck, looking after those students who are not feeling well, escorting students to and from restrooms, sewing a uniform that has fallen apart, and more:) If this sounds like fun to you, please consider serving in this area.

We have a few veteran chaperons (who know the drill) who will join us for most games, and we rotate all others who are interested. For away games, we will give first priority to those working the concession stand at home games.

The District requires that all chaperons be fingerprinted and have a background check completed. If you are interested in chaperoning the upcoming season, please email me. I will send you information regarding the procedure. If you served as a chaperon last season, please send me an email to verify that you would like to chaperon again.

Uniform Alterations

Each fall we fit the band members for their uniforms and each year parents volunteer their time to help repair and alter the uniforms. Some of our recent volunteers have "graduated." If any current band parents would be willing to help in this area, please send me an email. We need approximately 4 volunteers so that no one person is overloaded. Thank you!

Attendance Issues

Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. It is very difficult to rehearse the band when students are missing (especially field rehearsals). During band camp we have unavoidable conflicts since we share students with many Whitmer sports teams (and we are happy to do so). Obviously, student illness, death in the family, etc., are always excused. When it is possible please check our rehearsal and performance schedule when making various appointments. If a student must miss (whether excused or unexcused) please let us know as soon as possible. Please email Mrs. Maroon with all attendance related issues.
